Sometimes my wife and I are not able to select a reasonable Christmas gift for someone in our family or for one of our friends.

If we can't make a decision then we usually give either cash or a "gift card" depending on who the person is.

This year we have the following option if we do not wish to give cash or a "gift card."

If the person is an adult, and if the person is a Christian, then we may decide to give the person the following book.

The Pilgrim's Progress The Pilgrim's Progress (From This World, to That Which Is to Come), by John Bunyan, Legacy Edition, Copyright 2024, 276 pages, Hard Cover Cloth Bound, ISBN 978-1989975237.

The Amazon customer rating for the "Legacy Edition" of this book is 4.9 out of 5.0 based on 171 customer ratings as of December 2, 2024.

The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan while he was in prison for 12 years from 1660 to 1672. He was arrested and put into prison because he preached and shared the Gospel message of Jesus Christ without an "official license" from the Church of England.

The first edition of The Pilgrim's Progress was published in 1678.
In 1681 it was reprinted in the colonies of North America and it was very popular with the Puritans.
There are 10 chapters in the first book. Those chapters describe a "dream" of a man named "Christian" and how he made a journey from his home to the Celestial City of God in Glory. The Legacy Edition (picture on right) includes the entire first book.

The first book was so successful that Bunyan wrote a second book that describes how Christian's wife and four children, who had originally decided to not accompany Christian on his journey, later changed their minds and they make their journey to the Celestial City. The second book is not in the Legacy Edition.

The Legacy Edition contains 154 black and white illustrations that were originally wood-cut illustrations for various early printings of this book. Those illustrations add a significant visual appreciation to the story.
The language in the Legacy Edition has been updated from the original old-English language to our modern English language. This makes it easy to understand each sentence the first time the sentence is read.
When appropriate, relevant scripture verses are included on the margins of some pages.
A cardboard map has been inserted into the back of the book and that map illustrates the journey of the man named Christian. But you will need a strong magnifying glass to read the names of the places on the map.

The Pilgrim's Progress has been continuously in print since it was first published. It has been translated into more than 200 languages. It has been praised by many people for more than 340 years for helping them in their personal struggle to be the type of Christian that Jesus would be proud of.

The Pilgrim's Progress, 2019 In the 21st century many people prefer to watch a movie instead of reading a book.

The 2019 DVD animated movie shown on the right is a very good adaptation of the book.

The movie is 1 hour 53 minutes in length.
