Book Description on Amazon.com

When we were young some of us may have had daydreams of growing up and becoming an explorer and traveling deep into a wilderness area and living off the land. However, none of us had daydreams about growing up and one day becoming a homeless person. But life sometimes unfolds in unexpected ways and one day we may be confronted with a future that we would never have believed could happen to our family. The purpose of this book is to make wilderness survival not only feasible but also enjoyable to the extent possible.

This book does not discuss basic survival skills such as how to build a temporary shelter. Instead this book discusses the advantages and disadvantages of all the different types of campfires, and the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of different ways to cook over a campfire. It clearly explains how to hunt, trap, and fish, and how to field dress what you kill, and how to prepare what you kill so that it becomes part of a delicious and healthy meal. This book also discusses the things you should take with you into the wilderness so that you can be successful at cooking meals using a campfire.

Approximately one-third of this book is devoted to campfire skills. Approximately two-thirds of this book contains more than 270 basic simple recipes that can be prepared at a campfire, including edible wild plants, wild game, wild birds, fresh fish, fresh bread, vegetables, side dishes, desserts, coffee substitutes, and homemade wine. If you should ever need to survive in the wilderness then depending on the internet to answer all your questions will probably not be a good strategy. Instead you should take this book with you into the wilderness so that you will have a complete reference manual on what to do and how to do it.

The information in this book would allow you to avoid the pain of learning how to survive by making lots and lots of mistakes until you learn the best way to do something. The information in this book will help you to do things right the first time, and every time after that. Food will probably be scarce at a survival campsite and the information in this cookbook will allow you to prepare the food that you do have available in a variety of delicious ways so that you could enjoy your meals instead of wondering what the next meal will taste like, and whether or not you will gag when you try to eat it.

Preface to
Grandpappy's Campfire Survival Cookbook

To successfully cook something delicious over a campfire a person needs three things: a campfire, a good recipe, and something to cook. All the wild game animal, game bird, and fresh fish cookbooks that I own have 95% of their content devoted to recipes. Not one book in my entire collection discusses how to build a campfire that is suitable for cooking food. And all of my cookbooks assume that you already have something to cook and that you don’t need any suggestions on how to acquire some tasty wild animals, game birds, or fresh fish. And they also assume that the meat has already been cleaned and butchered.

This cookbook is different. This cookbook begins by discussing everything a person needs to know about how to start a fire, and how to build a fire that is perfect for cooking. This cookbook then explains how to acquire wild game animals by hunting with a rifle, and with a bow and arrows, and how to trap wild game, and how to fish. Then this book explains how to clean and butcher the animals, the birds, and the fish to get them ready for cooking. The last two-thirds of this cookbook contains a wide assortment of campfire recipes for wild game animals, game birds, waterfowl, and fresh fish. Many of these recipes only require salt and black pepper. However, a few optional basic spices, such as onion powder or garlic powder, are also recommended for many of the recipes. This cookbook also includes recipes for side dishes, breads, and desserts that can be easily cooked using a campfire.

This cookbook was written for someone who wants to know how to acquire food from nature, how to correctly and safely process that food, how to build a campfire that will cook that food properly, and how to season and cook the food to make it delicious.

Respectfully,
Robert Wayne Atkins, P.E. (Grandpappy)
